Haiku my Heart - Acts of Kindness

a homeless woman
huddled in a dark doorway
away from the wind

A sad haiku perhaps, but a truthful one.  I believe this scene happens more than we would want to think.
On my local news tv, I recently saw a segment about jackets being tied to trees in a nearby community,  with a note to take it if  you need it.  Many jackets. And they did disappear.  It has been really, really cold in Florida, unusually cold, below freezing even.
It eventually came out that a young woman was tying these jackets to trees because of her concern for those who were cold, homeless, had no heat, otherwise unable to get warm. She has been gathering donated jackets to give away in this tie-to-a-tree fashion.

Imagine....if everyone able to help another in need had the same heartfelt giving spirit as this wonderful woman.  Bless her.

There are no greater gifts than those that come from our hearts.

  1. Your story and haiku go hand in hand. May all the hands that are cold in Florida find mittens and gloves tied to a tree somewhere!

  8. It's a daily and, as you say, extremely sad reality in New York City. I've seen people sleeping on vents (to get the warmth that comes from the buildings) and on doorways, too. I must confess that I've gotten in trouble more than once for snarling at the police when they try to kick people out of the doorways of public and private buildings, when all they are doing is doing what they can not to freeze.
