Haiku my Heart 5/7/5 - The Way it Is

the farmer watches
as his crops wither in sun
there is no market

I learn daily of sad news, the domino effect this pandemic is having on our planet. Here in Florida (and other places as well) blueberries, tomatoes and other crops wilt in the sun for lack of a place to send them.  Schools, a major source of milk sales for the dairy farmer, are no longer ordering. The milk is poured into the ground by the hundreds of gallons. The cows cant just stop producing and only so much can be given away, so what is the answer? Warehouses have cut back orders for vegetables. The food that cannot be given away rots.

How long ago was it that the news was filled with stories of children going hungry? Of the homeless begging for food? How quickly situations change. All because of a little "germ". Something we cannot see, taste, feel. Our world has been beaten down by a microbe.

Good stories abound about kindness. But the opposite too. The schools give out packages of free food to keep the kids who always ate at school going. There are those adults who drive from school to school collecting these packages, then offer them for sale on line. Honest! It happened here. And they got caught!

If you would like to read something GOOD, something WONDERFUL, something that will make  you feel all warm and peaceful inside, please visit the blog I am linked to for this Haiku Friday.

You will not be sorry. And...if you bring a haiku to share, all the better.

Don't forget. Next Wednesday is
Earth Day
Remember to be kind to our planet. Always.

  1. Thank you Judie, for all your words and holding both the kindnesses and the fallibility of our humanness. I hold the hope that we can emerge from this and not waste the gifts of this earth... that we can find a way to live in balance. I am so grateful for you and all that you share. Thank you my Florida haiku friend.

  3. I can't even watch the news anymore. It is so sad. Your haiku sums it up for a lot of the farmers. Have a good weekend anyway. Big hugs.

  5. I hear and read stories about crops going to waste because no one is available to harvest them, and I weep.

  6. Sad but well written haiku ~ we live in 'hard times' and it does not bring out the best in people ~ but then again they were like that before ~ We need to honor Mother Earth and take care of her ~

  7. Such a beautiful yet heart-rending post...yes, it is a similar situation here too...this invisible microbe bringing out the best and the worst in people, as it brings the entire globe to it's knees.🙁
I will never understand how some people can be so selfish in a time when so many others are really struggling. How on earth do they sleep at night?
And a whole world of wasted food and list lives...such a tragedy. 😢
Oh PLEASE let this end soon...🙏🙏🙏

    Stay safe, my friend!

    Hugs xxx

  8. I wish there was a way to get that food to the poor. There are still those who have to worry about food and shelter on top of this plague. I best not tell my Darling Youngest about uneaten blueberries anywhere. We both adore blueberries.

  9. Food going to waste is always so painful to see. All those times our parents told you to eat everything on our plate, because kids were starving somewhere in the world, suddenly make sense. I find myself not being able to throw away anything--not even the super stinky cheese my Piano Man loves and I completely hate.

Like Rommy, I so wish the food that is going to waste could go to those in need, and that the farmers get compensated too.

  10. As much as your haiku is beautifully written, it also shows great sadness during these times we're in.

  14. Strange times, indeed, when crops wither in the sun, and people go hungry.
