.....of deep meaning; of great and broadly inclusive significance
I have been reading
"The Essential Haiku
versions of Basho, Buson & Issa"
I am especially taken with the writings of
Kobayashi Issa (1763 - 1827)
a master of Haiku and other forms of poetry
who unfortunately led quite a sad life
and yet wrote awesome poetic thoughts.
This prose is taken from his journal
"From A Year Of My Life"
written in 1819

"Not far from the village of Shiba someone caught a baby crow - no bigger than a lump of coal - and put it in a cage in front of the house. That night I heard the mother flying back and forth above the house, crying over and over again in the darkness.
Over and over
the she-crow's voice
crying in the dark."

ReplyDeleteThe pain did enter my heart direct. I also thing the same whenever I see birds in cage. Someones' hobby/fun/beauty in someones' pain :)
ReplyDeleteBrief and heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteThat's one of the things I love most about haiku (and about flash fiction). That so much can be capture in just a few words.
WOW Judie. Love this. Your crow art rocks!!! Issa haiku and journal words so good. Thank you for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI forgot it was Friday (no haiku from me) doh!
the separation of any mother and child fills me with deep sorrow and lament. love your crow painting and your reading sessions of the great haiku masters. thank you for being a weekly touchstone of love and compassion. xo
ReplyDeleteLove your crow painting. I read something this morning about how we cage animals and think nothing of it. How birds, circle and circle in their cages... this planet... is so beautiful and so terrifying all in the same breath. Thank you for sharing some of Issa's life so that we can help him carry his sorrow and his sensitive heart... XO
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words and visiting my blog. I love the ocean also and have a thing for birds. Will stop by again soon.
